Another 'story' song, this imagining a comedian down on his luck, struggling to make ends meet and freezing in a city winter. Very much influenced by the beatniks, full of images that rattle by without explanation. It was one of the most ambitious songs we had put together, with separate parts leading to a big chorus and climax.

We're going down through every corner of the city tomb
Huddling around a bin of fire beneath a freezing moon
The rain crashes down either side of the Iron Bridge
He’s waiting on the deal he regards as a patronage.

Under the bridge was she saw found him burning broken chairs
Separation of man still disguising under watchful stares
Encouraging well all assembly that she had to find
For white medicine time, each calling the medallion mind.

Jokes born into the dark of the closed and empty cinema
Old reels turn and play Dr Strangelove to his repertoire
Stark bodies love lies under water in The Writing Bath
I never expected them to be laughing down that lonely
path.
Should he be handsome or dead, she may love him but he
doesn't mind
When the applause is like rain, on this stage it's hard to find
And when the last drop leaves his body then the laughter
stops
He's feeling like the bulb that floats and flashes upon the ocean top.
